What’s Happening In Social Media

TikTok GOES THE CLOCK...

The White House announced that TikTok has 45 days to be bought out by an American company or it will (likely) be banned from the U.S.

WHY BAN IT?

TikTok is owned by the chinese company ByteDance. There has been concern over the possibility of the Chinese government gathering information about Americans through data collected via the app. TikTok has already been banned from military issued devices in Australia, the UK and the US.

ANY POTENTIAL BUYERS?

Yes. On August 2nd, Microsoft posted to it’s corporate blog confirming discussions surrounding the possibility of purchasing TikTok in the US. Since Microsoft's confirmations, there has been talk that the company may be pursuing the purchase of some of TikTok's global operations.

Something To Pay Attention To

IG Reels

On Wednesday, Facebook owned platform Instagram launched IG Reels. A competitor to TikTok’s short video platform

(prompting this snarky response tweet from TikTok).

WHAT CAN I EXPECT?

Similar to TikTok, IG Reels, which lives within the instagram app, allows users to create and edit short 15 second videos clips with the ability to add music and incorporate filters and special effects.

IG Reels can then be featured on the Explore Page, very similar to TikTok’s ‘For You’ page.

HOW DO I USE IT?

We found a great breakdown for you on Later.com.

WHAT’S YOUR TAKEAWAY?

For those already familiar with instagram who may have avoided the learning curve of yet another social platform such as TikTok, IG Reels should come as a cozy addition to the already successful platform.

For those who use TikTok, IG Reels should be a breeze to operate. While IG Stories are created for in-the-moment shares of your day to day, IG Reels are there for inspiration and entertainment.

Either way, we see IG Reels as a win.
